Shannyn Sossamon. You may recognise her from recent fantasy picture A Knight's Tale. She certainly has Nynaeve's scowl down here. I have a tendancy to hate her because I didn't like her character in the film, but I'm not saying her acting was
bad, or that she doesn't have the look. She could well fit the part.
Asia Argento. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to witness Asia's acting skills (her biggest project to date being xXx) but I read the suggestion and the picture looks quite close to what I imagined as Nynaeve. Actually, Asia is probably my
favourite for Nynaeve. She has little features, is about the right age, and has a potentially angry look.
Drew Barrymore. Despite putting Drew on the layout, I really don't see her as Nynaeve. She certainly seems to play many strong-willed characters well, but I think she just has the wrong look. Whereas Asia seems to have smaller features... and I think it adds to
Nyn's character to be this tiny little woman who is capable of exploding. Am I making sense?
Kate Winslet. As we've seen in Titanic, she can play both fiery and tender. She certainly has that distinguishing quality that makes you remember her over the last actress. She seems to be a very popular choice for Nynaeve, and she's about the right age for the role too. I must admit, at first I couldn't see Kate as Nynaeve, but now I'm warming to the thought!
Rose Byrne. Having not heard of Rose before, but seen her suggested for Nynaeve on a forum, I looked her up and found that she has acted in recent Star Wars films and soon will be appearing in Troy. While I can't vouch for her acting skills, not having experienced them, she would be a very beautiful dark-eyed, dark haired Nynaeve, and has a very distinctive look.
Rachel Weisz. This seems to be a popular choice for Nynaeve throughout the net. Personally, I think Rachel has definitely proved herself from her role in The Mummy. I think she could definitely pull off a Nynaeve - she conveyed defensiveness, pride and anger very realistically in her fantasy role as Evelyn.
Liam Neeson. He's about the right age for the role. He also has a spectacular ability to convey both hardness and compassion (as we've seen in Les Misérables) - can't you just hear him saying "I am not a King, Nynaeve. Just a man" with a softened face? Well, I can!
Daniel Day Lewis. He definitely looks the part in this picture from Last of the Mohicans. This film also gives us a good idea of how Lewis might portray a Lan. He comes across as a true ranger, at one with the wild, a superb swordsman, commanding
and passionate when roused.
Val Kilmer. He looks like a Lan in this Willow screenshot, if a little young. Through this film, it also makes him a popular choice for a lead role in a fantasy film. He's believable in a knight role, but can certainly handle his love scenes
too. I don't know what age range he's in now though - that might cause a problem!
Viggo Mortensen. Well, there's no denying that he'd make a wonderful Lan. But would he choose a role so similar to that of Aragorn in Lord of the Rings? I think it's extremely unlikely. There would be so much press on the similarities of Wheel of Time to Tolkien's classic, and probably
Aragorn and Lan in particular, if he was being played by the same actor! Still, we can dream, can't we?
Rutger Hauer. He would be too old for the role now, but in his Ladyhawke years he would have been perfect; in the role, he has the blade skills, the cold blue eyes, the stony face, deep, rough voice and even the black stallion! This guy in Ladyhawke IS my
Lan. Watch the movie and I hope you'll agree with me!
Russell Crowe. As seen in Gladiator, Russell can play the role of the hardened warrior superbly. He has the low, rough voice, the intensity, the vivid eyes and he wouldn't have to train much for using a sword! He can conjure up the perfect stony looks and definitely has a commanding presence on screen.
Ralf Moueller. So I read this suggestion on a Wheel of Time forum. I've only seen him in his brief role in Gladiator - he was one of Maximus' closest gladiator friends - the one that pretends to be poisoned by the stew. Although we don't witness much of his acting skills, he definitely has the looks down, and oh my, his arms! He's a big, burly warrior man who you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of.
